Last Mile Money with the Gates Foundation

In 2019 IDEO Colab began work with the gates foundation. We were awarded a grant to design resources for those in highly rural areas to gain access to financial services that could help lift them out of poverty. The grant is for the ensuing 5 years, this page reflects the most up to date state of the work and my involvement from the initial stages in 2019 and onward.

I kicked off the project with a discovery trip in India, our first country of focus (the next one likely being Indonesia). We spent 2 weeks developing partnerships and doing design research in rural areas in and around Tamil Nadu and Delhi. My role focused on the design research and synthesizing all the new systems we were becoming exposed to. Specifically I focused on unravelling the complex requirements of operating an "agent network" that serviced rural banking. Once back in the United States we spent some time as a team developing project briefs for short exploratory design sprints. One of these included design principles for low literacy.
